The King who restored fashion in England.

Charles II

Charles II was king of England, Scotland and Ireland. In 1660 he returned from exile in France to take up the English throne, which marked the end of republican rule and a new age of prosperity for the aristocracy in England. With this restoration, the opulence returned to fashion in England. The King Charles II was known for his love of fashionable dress and introduced styles from the French court. In 1666, he presented a more sober style of a coat, waistcoat or vest, and breeches. This is seen as the origin of the three-piece suit. The justaucorps (knee-length coat) took over from the doublet as the main garment in a man’s wardrobe. The lower part of this coat had back and side openings to allow a sword to poke through them. Gradually justaucorps became tighter on the waist and fuller at the hem. Sleeves were wide with turned-back cuffs. The waistcoat was worn underneath— it was the same length but narrower in cut than the coat, with long, fitted sleeves. By the 1680's, breeches became slimmer in fit and fastened at the knee. Moreover Charles II brought to England the heels and red soles earlier introduced by Louis XIV in France. In 1660-1680 in society and women’s fashions also happened significant changes. The evolution of women's clothing saw the slow disappearance of the dress made up of a boned bodice, a skirt, and gown, and the beginnings of the mantua, a loose gown with an overskirt elaborately draped at the back.
